It was a great atmosphere on day 1 of Stoneleigh Horse Show held at the NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. It was great to see the showing classes get underway which meant there were a lot of opportunities to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show.
The first class of the day in Arena 6 was the Price Family First Ridden Pony. The young jockeys were incredibly professional and the turnout of their ponies was impeccable. Ten year-old Emma Harker from North Yorkshire was the first winner of the day with pony Ravara Mr Tod, qualifying for HOYS in October. She commented that her pony was very young and it was his first year of lead rein. Despite being new to the circuit she was ecstatic to come away with the win.
Taking place in the Showing World Arena was the Kathleen Wood 148cm Children’s Riding Pony, a highly competitive class which saw 15 year-old Olivia Maltby and pony Unlimited II pulled forward for the win. This is Olivia’s fourth season with the nine year-old pony owned by Peter Emmerson. Olivia has been to HOYS every year on Unlimited since she started riding her so is delighted to be heading back again this year. Later Olivia went on to win the Children’s Riding Pony Championship.
Over in the National Pony Society/Snuggy Hoods Intermediate Working Hunter Pony class, it was Elton John II ridden by Daniella Johnston who took the win and went on to win the Championship.
There was a great turn out in the Equissage Pulse Ridden Partbred Pony with 38 combinations forward. The winner was 12 year old Charlotte Tuck with Kenilwood Winborne, a five year old. It is their first season together and Charlotte has produced him herself. They also enjoy jumping and hacking out at home but he really loves the show ring. Charlotte has ridden at HOYS every year since she was four and is looking forward to being back at HOYS again this year. She absolutely loves the atmosphere. This is the sixth pony she has qualified for HOYS this year now and they will be back tomorrow to contest the M&M Juniors.
Last class of the day in the Showing World Arena was The Binks Family Show Hunter Pony and it was Sutton Grange Fancy That, known as FT at home, who took the 143cm class and went on to take the Championship. Ridden by 13 year old Freddy Wharton from North Yorkshire, the pair put on a beautiful display and were delighted with their win. It is their second season together and will be their second time at Horse of the Year Show. “He has a fabulous temperament and loves hacking at home. This winter we are going to try some hunting with him.”
