National Club Horse Championships

Class 33 90CM CHAMPIONSHIP winner

The National Club Horse Championships saw a number of competitors from up and down the country battle it out to take the 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1m Championship title today at the British Showjumping National Championships.

The first class contested was the National Club Horse 70cm Championship which saw Emily Scott and China V take first place followed by Ben Miller and Cuckoopen Forest Endevor who took second place.

Taking the spoils in the 80cm Championship was Jane Courtney riding Dominant Van Slabroek. Second place went to Claire Engelmann with her own Angus VI.

The penultimate class was the 90cm Championship which went to Sally Mcnaughton and the speedy Gunner Mason. Based in East Yorkshire, Sally has owned Gunner Mason for the past five years and also won the National Club Horse 70cm Championship two years ago. The pair were the only clear in the jump off, completing the final course in 51.79 seconds.

Sally commented on her round: “I came out today never really expecting to win. My mare jumped really well, I just never expected to win. We’ve really enjoyed ourselves at the Championships this year, the ground has been superb and all the courses have been great. It’s riding club mostly at the end of the day, so the courses here have been challenging but I’ve really enjoyed them.” Coming runner up to Sally and Gunner Mason was Suzannah Engelmann riding her own Lissin Rocket.

The last class of the day was the 1.00m Championship and this time it was the turn of Suzannah Engelmann with Lissin Rocket who had been waiting patiently all day having competed in all four National Club Horse sections. Based in Saffron Walden, Suzannah won the 80cm and 90cm classes last year at the Championships so was thrilled to have now won the 1.00m.

Commenting on her round Suzannah said: “He’s not been jumping that brilliantly recently so I was so pleased to get him round. He’s partially sighted in one eye so that takes a bit of managing so he can be a little bit of handful to get round the course.”

The British Showjumping Club Leagues provide Club Members with the opportunity to not only focus on heading their regional league table within their chosen height category, but to also qualify for their respective Championship with the goal of claiming a National Championship title at the British Showjumping National Championships.

Club Membership is specifically for members competing between 0.70m – 1.00m with a focus on league points rather than prize money. The four height categories within each region for both horses and ponies are 0.70m, 0.80m, 0.90m and 1.00m and there are a total of eight regions spanning the length and breadth of the country.
