It was Essex based showjumper, Danielle Westlake aboard the experienced 21 year old Dun mare, Caramel Twist who was the eventual winner of the All Horse Magazine 80cm Pony Open. The class had an overwhelming amount of entries which led to a great start to the competition on day two of the British Showjumping National Championships 2018. With many pony/rider combinations struggling to achieve a clear round, the course proved challenging and the pressure was on to keep the jumps in situ.
Caramel Twist, who is fondly known as Murtle, showed her experience as she came home in record time having produced a text book clear round with some hand brake turns in the jump off. Danielle, aged 15, has had the ride of Murtle since September last year and has had a flying season competing at numerous venues around the UK including Wales and West, Brook Farm and Keysoe to name just a few. “We have done quite a lot at 80cm and 90cm so I am looking forward to doing some more 1.00m classes with her next so I can get some experience on bigger tracks.”
The winning combination will be contesting the Pony Bronze League 148cm & Under Fianl at the Show tomorrow. In second place was Hannah Bishop with Ballyveane Rebel, a seven year old grey gelding, and in third was Freya Barry with Brynnebo Victoria, a 16 year old bay mare.
